SelfEsteem
Self-esteem
is very important to all of us. Growing up, we have many experiences
that help shape our feelings about ourselves. Often, we learn to
value who we are and what we can. Yet in each new situation, our
self-esteem is tested. In situations where we feel capable and trusted,
we do well. Our self-esteem is high. In other situations we
may feel less skillful. We are unsure of what support we will get.
If we fail, our self-esteem may suffer.

of times when you've felt really good about yourself. Perhaps you
had some of the following feelings:
* You felt good about an accomplishment. "Look at this closet. It took me all day, but now I know where to find everything." * You were ready to accept responsibilities. I'll organize the block party." * You were independent. "I haven't been there before, but I have a map so I'll be able to find my way." * You didn't give up easily. "This reading assignment is really hard to understand. I think if I take notes, I'll get the important points." * You weren't afraid to express your feelings. "I felt hurt when you questioned my word." You can also probably remember times when you felt bad about yourself. Your self-esteem was at a low. Perhaps you had some of these feelings: * You put yourself down. "Oh, I'm so stupid. I can never get it right." * You felt powerless. "I don't have any idea what I'm supposed to do. I'm hopelessly lost." * You avoided difficult situations. "I'm not going to the club dance is she's going to be there." * You blamed others. "I couldn't help it! He didn't tell me where the paint was." * You felt that no one valued you. "They'll never pick me."
